Dear Meriet

What a sensational visit yesterday! I will write properly soon but just to say, please could you bring another book as we’ve had a request – so that would be 3 more – might be worth bringing half a dozen!
Many thanks

Bridget

Hi Meriet,

Thank you so much and also for giving us all (staff included) such an entertaining day, thoroughly enjoyed by all.

I've attached our newsletter so you can see my write up, some photos and children's quotes.

Here are some of the children's thoughts about the day:

Visit by Meriet Duncan - Beekeeper

This week Years 3 and 4 enjoyed a wonderful visit from Meriet Duncan, beekeeper, speaker and author. They were captivated by all the fascinating 'bee' facts that she gave them and they had the opportunity to look at all the bee related objects she had brought with her as well as tasting some honey. Many children also purchased her beautiful hardback book - Betsy Valentine and the Honeybees, which she signed for them. Copies can still be purchased at the reduced price of £10. Should you still wish to purchase one, please send this in a named envelope by Monday and then we will arrange to collect the number of books ordered.

Here are some of the children's thoughts about the day:

I never knew there were over 250 types of bees. Zackery T

Meriet was nice and kind and answered all our questions carefully. Louie

I never knew that bees flap their wings 180 times a second. Emma

Honey bees have lived for 100 million years and without bees we would not be alive. Samuel

I never knew there were lots of different colours of bees. Harley

Honey bees are fascinating. Emilia

My favourite part was eating the honey and bread and seeing the wax. William R

It was really interesting to learn about all the different jobs bees have to do before they die. Anna S

My favourite part was trying on the suits! William A

My favourite part was trying on the suits and eating the honey and bread. Naomi L

I liked looking at the honey hive and learning about all of the different steps of making honey. Chessie

I was really surprised to find out that it takes bees travelling 55,000 miles just to make one jar of honey. Harvey

I was surprised to find out how to make a beehive. Molly

I loved dressing up in the bee suit - it was hot and everyone said I looked like a spaceman. Sebbie

My best part was the end of the day when I received my book and I started reading it. Kate

Subject: Talks to Womens Institutes in Shropshire

Message:

Hello Meriet,

I have recently heard about your fantastic work with honey bees and successful talks to community groups. I am part of the Shropshire Federation Womens Institute (SFWI) and we are always looking for new speakers for our WIs to enjoy. I see that you are travelling to Uganda in February. Good luck and I hope that you enjoy your travels.
I would love to chat with you about becoming one of our speakers if that interests you.
Could you let me know either on my email or tel: 01939 262457
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards
AnnieOwen (SFWI)

to me

Hi Meriet,

Thank you for a lovely, informative day which the children and staff loved. I think I even heard a few children buzzing around the playground.

Also, a huge thank you for the gift book for school!

Once again wonderful feedback from the Chafont St Peter CoE Primaray Academy school!

Visit to Year 3 by Meriet Duncan The Year 3 classes enjoyed some brilliant workshops on Monday with Meriet Duncan, who has visited us several times before. The children were totally engaged during her talk and loved seeing all the bee related items she brought along such as a deconstructed hive (no live bees!), pictures of the different types of bees and pots of honey. We were all mesmerised by the incredible

facts about bees such as a single bee only makes one twelfth of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime and bees' wings flutter at 180 times per second! Also hearing about the different jobs the types of bees do, such as the workers, drones and queen - what an amazing community each hive is! After the talk the children loved dressing up in the bee keeper outfits as you can see in the photos. Many children purchased Meriet's lovely books which she kindly signed and wrote "Keep buzzing!" alongside their names. Meriet said the children were brilliant and that she loved visiting us again - many thanks and hopefully she'll be back in the future. Ms Meek (Year 3 Leader)
